Here at Rundle Dental, our goal is to help you minimize the fear and tension associated with your dental care needs. Sedation for dentistry can even be used for routine procedures such as teeth cleaning and check-ups.

While under sedation, you will be in a deeply relaxed state and will be responsive when spoken to. Your vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure while your dentist completes his work. At the end of the treatment, you’ll have little or no memory of what was accomplished.

Sedation dentistry is safe, easy and effective! And with sedation dentistry, we can perform any dental procedure that you need! The whole goal of sedation dentistry is to help you achieve your goal of complete dental health.

What kinds of sedatives are available?

The most popular types of dental sedatives are nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Different levels of sedation can be utilized depending on an individual’s need. Before administering any type sedative, the dentist must fully analyze the medical history of the patient, taking note of any current medications and medical conditions.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is used as a mild sedative. It is delivered through a nose hood and is administered throughout the entire procedure. Nitrous oxide elevates the general mood and can evoke a general sense of well-being. Most importantly, it relieves anxiety and reduces pain during the procedure. In addition, some tingling and numbness may be felt. Nitrous oxide has been safely used in dentistry for many years and can be safely used for patients of all ages.

What is Oral Conscious Sedation?

A prescribed oral medication (tablet) is provided in the dental office prior to dental treatment in order to induce a moderate state of sedation. Though oral sedatives do not cause you to sleep, it will dull the senses. This means that most patients cannot remember the sights, sounds or smells associated with the procedure. Usually, a dose of medication is taken at the start of the appointment and then topped up during the procedure as required.

These sedatives commonly used in dentistry provide a comfortable and relaxing experience at the dentist that you won’t even remember.
